John C. Whitehead is Chairman of the Goldman Sachs Foundation. He joined Goldman Sachs & Co., in 1947 and worked there for 38 years, rising within the company to be named partner in 1956 and Co-Chairman and Senior Partner in 1976. He has served on the boards of many companies, most notably as Director of the New York Stock Exchange and Chairman of the Securities Industry Association. In April 1985, Mr. Whitehead was named Deputy Secretary of State, a position he held until 1989. During this period, Whitehead took a special interest in relations with Eastern Europe and the United Nations. In recognition for his service, Whitehead was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal in 1989 by President Reagan. Whitehead graduated from Haverford College in 1943 and received his MBA from Harvard in 1947.
