Richard L. Armitage is President of Armitage International, a position he has held since 2005. Armitage, who was Deputy Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, began his career as a commissioned duty Ensign in the US Navy. During the Reagan campaign, he served as Senior Advisor to the Interim Foreign Policy Advisory Board. From May 1981 until June 1982, Armitage was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia and Pacific Affairs in the Office for the Secretary of Defense. He then served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Affairs from 1983 to 1989. During the 1991 Gulf War, he served as Special Emissary to Jordan’s King Hussein. In 1989, Armitage became the Presidential Special Negotiator for the Philippines Military Bases Agreement and Special Mediator for Water in the Middle East, a position he held until 1992. Armitage directed US assistance to the new independent states of the former Soviet Union from 1992 until May 1993. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1967.
